For many years, grim animosity has prevailed between the robbers of Matt and the robbers of Borka. While the villain Matt lives together with his clan and his daughter Ronja in Matt’s Fort in security, the villain Borka and his gang are hunted by mercenary soldiers.

During the night when Ronja was born, 12 years ago, a lightning bolt struck the Matt’s Fort and split it into two halves. Since then, a deep sheer gapes between the two halves of the castle: the hell’s gorge. One day, Ronja wants to explore this gorge and does not believe her eyes when she sees a boy on the other side. It is Birk, Borka’s only son. Borka’s clan must have moved secretly into the empty part of Matt’s castle shortly before.

RON_pr1A_200Matt fumes when his daughter tells him that his arch-enemy has moved into the castle of his forefathers. During one of her lonely rambles through the wood, Ronja meets Birk again and the two children secretly become friends. While their clans fight each other, they meet in the wood, play together and strive through the world of fairies and trolls.

RON_pr7A_200One day, Birk is caught by the robbers of Matt’s clan. With him as their hostage, Matt wants to compel the robbers of Borka to leave his fort and the wood. Ronja becomes so angry about it that she directly jumps over the hell’s gorge into the arms of the Borka robbers. Now, they also have a hostage and Matt does not have any other chance as to let Birk go in exchange for Ronja. Both robber clans now know that their children know each other and they forbid them to meet again.

However, Ronja and Birk do not accept this decision. Together, they flee into the woods and spend one whole summer in an empty bear’s den. But then, winter is coming closer and their food supplies become scarcer. They had sworn only to return home when their parents have made peace with each other but to stay much longer in the den could mean death for both of them…

"Ronja the Robber’s Daughter" is one of the most popular novels written by Astrid Lindgren (1907 – 2002), who is said to be the "most-famous children’s author of the world". It is a sentimental and powerful story, wild, romantic and full of humor. The Junges Theater Bonn is now producing "Ronja the Robber’s Daughter’ for the first time with children playing the roles of the protagonists ‘Ronja’ and ’Birk’.
